Actor Amal Sehrawat, who has been a part of projects like Satya 2, Sarkar 3, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Choti Sarrdaarni, Untouchables, believes acting has done much more than shape his career—it has transformed the way he understands people. Having portrayed diverse characters over the years, Amal says every role has strengthened his empathy and taught him to look beyond first impressions.

Reflecting on how acting has influenced his understanding of human behaviour, Amal says, “One of the biggest gifts acting has given me is empathy. Every character has a story, and when you spend time understanding their motivations, fears and dreams, you naturally become less judgmental in real life. Whether it was working on Sarkar 3, Untouchables, television or commercials, every project reminded me that people are far more complex than they appear. Today, I try to understand before I react, and I think that has made me a better actor and a better human being.”

Talking about the lessons acting has taught him personally, Amal says every role has left an impact on him in some way. “Every role leaves something behind, but one important realization was that I am far more patient and emotionally resilient than I once believed. Coming from a modelling background, I initially focused on physical presence and discipline. Acting taught me that true strength comes from emotional honesty. I discovered that I’m comfortable being vulnerable when the story demands it, and that was a side of myself I hadn’t fully explored before becoming an actor,” he shares.

For Amal, the toughest roles have not necessarily been the most emotional ones, but the ones where he had to portray people whose beliefs differed from his own. “The most challenging roles have been the ones where the character’s beliefs were completely different from my own. It’s easy to play someone you relate to, but it’s much harder to understand someone whose choices you don’t agree with. Working with directors like Ram Gopal Varma and Vikram Bhatt taught me that an actor’s responsibility isn’t to judge a character but to understand them. That shift in perspective challenged me personally and helped me grow both professionally and emotionally,” he says.

Although emotionally demanding characters often stay with him, Amal has developed his own ways of maintaining balance once filming is over. “A little bit of every character stays with me because every role teaches me something new. But I’ve also learned the importance of switching off. Fitness has always been a big part of my life, so training in the gym helps me reset mentally. Meditation, spending time with family and close friends, and returning to my daily routine help me reconnect with myself. I believe an actor should carry the lessons from a character, not the emotional burden,” he explains.

Looking back, Amal says his transition from modelling to acting was one of the biggest turning points in his journey. “Moving from modelling to acting was probably my biggest challenge. In modelling, your presence often speaks before your words. Acting demanded much more—it required emotional depth, vulnerability and complete honesty. There were moments when I questioned whether I was doing enough, but those experiences taught me to trust preparation instead of chasing perfection. Today, I see every difficult role as an opportunity to evolve rather than prove myself,” he says.

Speaking about how his perspective on acting has evolved over the years, Amal believes authenticity matters more than anything else. “When I started, I believed a good performance meant looking convincing and delivering dialogues with confidence. Today, I think it’s much simpler and much harder than that. A great performance is one that feels truthful. It’s about listening, reacting naturally and living the moment instead of performing it. If the audience remembers the character more than the actor, then I feel the performance has truly succeeded. That’s the kind of work I strive for every time I step in front of the camera,” he concludes.
