Kolkata: A biographical film based on the life and legacy of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, one of the significant figures in Indian history, is generating interest under the title ‘SHYAMA’. The project was first announced on 6 July 2026, marking the birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. The announcement was made by Suchandra X Vaaniya, an actor, writer and director. Following the initial grand announcement, the project has now entered the ‘FILMING NOW’ stage, according to the project update. Further details and surprises related to the film are expected to be revealed progressively.

Suchandra X Vaaniya: A Multidisciplinary Journey Across Cinema and Literature

Suchandra X Vaaniya is an actor, writer and director whose creative work spans filmmaking and literature. In 2021, she received the Best Female Debut Director award at the Montreal Independent Film Festival.

Among her notable film projects is ‘Ramayana: The Arrival of Suparnakha’, a docu-feature film that explores the familiar Ramayana narrative through the perspective of Suparnakha, offering an alternative lens through which to engage with the epic.

Alongside her work in cinema, Suchandra X Vaaniya is also engaged in literary writing. She has written a novel titled ‘একান্ন নারীর এক রামায়ণ’ (Ekanno Narir Ek Ramayan), which explores the untold and lesser-discussed stories of 51 women associated with the Ramayana. The literary work seeks to revisit the epic through women’s experiences, emotions and perspectives, bringing attention to narratives that have often received comparatively less attention.

With her involvement in acting, writing, directing and literature, Suchandra X Vaaniya is now bringing a new historical film project to the forefront through ‘SHYAMA’, centred on the life and legacy of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee.

‘SHYAMA’: Historical Research, Documentation and Screenplay

The film ‘SHYAMA’ is being directed by Suchandra X Vaaniya and Chaandroday Pal. Tathagata Roy has contributed to the project’s research and screenplay development. Having researched Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s life, political philosophy and historical role over many years, his research and historical perspectives have supported the development of the film’s research and script.

Additionally, BJP MLA Tarunjyoti Tewari is assisting with aspects of historical documentation, relevant source materials and legal considerations connected with the project. This collaboration aims to support a well-documented and carefully researched portrayal of the subject, drawing on relevant historical records and supporting material.

Through ‘SHYAMA’, the filmmakers aim to bring an important chapter of Indian history to a wider audience, particularly younger generations, through cinema. The project seeks to explore Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s life, political thought and historical significance through a biographical film format.

Following its first announcement on 6 July, the ‘FILMING NOW’ update marks the next stage of the project. According to the announcement, further information about the film, its development and other associated details will be shared gradually.

With more announcements anticipated, ‘SHYAMA’ is preparing to reveal additional aspects of its journey in the coming days.
