WEAVE ICONS: Inspiring Assam’s Next Generation of Weavers

Sualkuchi’s celebrated silk heritage is facing a growing challenge as fewer young people are choosing weaving as a profession. Drawn towards careers that promise glamour, visibility, urban lifestyles, and faster financial rewards, many are moving away from a craft that has defined Assam’s cultural identity for generations.

To address this concern, Mumbai-based fashion and advertising photographer, filmmaker, visual storyteller, and Founder of Rhythmic Threads, Somsubhro Sarkaar, has launched WEAVE ICONS – From Loom to the Limelight, a cultural storytelling initiative aimed at restoring pride, aspiration, and visibility to the profession of weaving.

As part of the initiative, six young weavers from Sualkuchi have been transformed and presented in couture creations by celebrated designer and filmmaker Dipankar Kashyap. Known for his recently released music project “Pakhi Loga Mone”, Dipankar’s association with WEAVE ICONS reflects his belief that creativity can be a force for social impact as much as it can be a platform for glamour. His collaboration with Somsubhro Sarkaar demonstrates how fashion, storytelling, and culture can come together to inspire meaningful change.

The campaign also features Ziraya, the brand muse of Rhythmic Threads, who serves as a symbolic bridge between heritage and aspiration, helping communicate the message to younger generations in a relatable and contemporary way.

At its heart, WEAVE ICONS seeks to remind young people that a weaver is not merely creating fabric but preserving a legacy, an identity, and a globally admired cultural heritage. Through visual storytelling, fashion, and public engagement, the initiative hopes to inspire a new generation to view weaving not as a profession of the past, but as a respected and aspirational path for the future.

As the campaign’s message suggests:

“Dream big. Build your future. But never underestimate the value of the legacy that already rests in your hands.”

With WEAVE ICONS, Rhythmic Threads hopes to spark a larger conversation across Assam about preserving one of the state’s most treasured traditions by inspiring the very generation that will determine its future.
