Being informed is responsible, being endlessly distracted is not: Gauri Jain

From flood victims to political reels, astrologer Gauri Jain believes social media feeds have flattened tragedy and trivia into the same urgent scroll. She spoke about why that constant exposure takes an emotional toll, and how she personally navigates the noise while using the platform to spread her own knowledge.

She said, “I think this is one of the biggest challenges of social media today: everything is presented to us with the same urgency, whether it is a tragedy, a political argument, a cute pet video, a celebrity update or an advertisement. Our minds are constantly moving from grief to anger, from entertainment to outrage, and then back to routine life, all within a few minutes.”

The real issue, she feels, isn’t awareness itself but the inability to process what we see. She said, “The problem is not that we know about these things, being informed and compassionate is important. The problem is constant exposure without the ability to process or act on what we are seeing.”

“We start feeling emotionally overwhelmed, yet often remain practically inactive. Social media algorithms are designed to hold our attention, not necessarily to protect our mental peace,” she added.

Her solution lies in becoming more deliberate about what she chooses to engage with. She said, “I believe we need to become more selective: know what is happening, decide what genuinely matters to us, take meaningful action where we can, and then step away.”

“We don’t have to consume every tragedy, every controversy and every opinion to prove that we care. Being informed is responsible, being endlessly distracted is not,” she added.

She also opened up about how social media affects her personally, both as a user and as someone using the platform to educate others. She said, “As an astrologer, I do believe social media can affect us emotionally. At the same time, I cannot deny its immense value, social media has helped astrology and Vastu reach people who may never have encountered these sciences otherwise. It gives us a platform to share knowledge, create awareness and have meaningful conversations.”

But she’s also mindful of the toll that constant exposure to the world’s problems can take. She said, “But the same platform also exposes us constantly to tragedies, controversies, political opinions, personal struggles and endless information, which can gradually make the mind restless and emotionally overloaded.”

“For me, the key is not to withdraw from social media, but to use it consciously. I want to use it to educate, create awareness and share my knowledge, without allowing the noise of the digital world to control my emotional space. Social media should be a medium through which we share our wisdom, not a place where we lose our peace,” Gauri ended.
