He does not simply wear fashion; he communicates through it: Anjali Phougat on how Diljit Dosanjh took a Punjabi-style global

Diljit Dosanjh has built a fashion identity that is as recognisable as his music. From his turbans and Punjabi silhouettes to his jewellery and international red carpet appearances, his style has become an important part of his public persona. Fashion designer Anjali Phougat believes what makes him stand out is that his clothes always seem to say something about who he is.

“What makes Diljit Dosanjh distinctive is that he does not simply wear fashion; he communicates through it. His clothing becomes an extension of his identity, his heritage and his personality,” she said.

She feels Diljit has created something much more personal. “In an industry where many artists can look interchangeable in perfectly tailored suits, blazers and luxury labels, Diljit has created something far more meaningful,” she said.

For her, his biggest strength is that he never enters a room without bringing his cultural identity with him. “He walks into a room, onto a stage or onto a global red carpet carrying Punjab with him,” she said.

His visual identity is built through several details, she shared, adding, “His turban, his Punjabi silhouettes, the dhoti, the jewellery, the textures and even the restraint in his styling all contribute to a very clear visual language.”

Even when the outfit is bold, she feels there is a sense of control behind it. “There is often a beautiful discipline to the way he balances statement pieces with clean, polished elements,” she said.

That consistency has helped make his style instantly recognisable. “And perhaps that is why his fashion has become so recognisable,” she said. “You can often identify Diljit before you even see his name.”

For Anjali, that is the real mark of personal style. What makes his fashion even more significant is the way he has carried Punjabi identity onto international platforms. “He understands something very important: ‘global’ does not have to mean ‘detached from your roots’. Diljit has taken the Punjabi identity to international platforms without diluting it to make it more palatable to the world,” she said.

The cultural references in his clothes remain visible. “Whether it is his turban, traditional Punjabi clothing, the way he incorporates jewellery, or the symbolism behind his styling, he allows his culture to remain visible and proud,” she said.

And there is an important distinction in how she sees him entering these global spaces. “He is not trying to become someone else in order to enter a global room. He is entering that room as Diljit Dosanjh,” she said.

That idea is particularly close to Anjali’s own design philosophy. “That resonates deeply with me because my own work in fashion has always been about representing Indian culture through a contemporary global lens,” she said.

For her, fashion should always have something to say. “I believe conscious fashion should carry a story. Diljit does exactly that,” she said.
